What is a 'marketing agent', really? This week's debate on X
Chatbot copywriter, workflow automation, or an agent that decides for itself? A classification from this week's debate on X, and why we deliberately build level two for clients.

This week's debate on X
The word "agent" now gets stuck on every marketing tool. This week the debate on X heated up over what actually deserves the name, and a useful classification came out of it for any business owner being offered an "AI agent that runs your ads".
Three levels, not one
On October 2 the writer arushh posted a simple split of what gets called an agent in marketing:
- Chatbot copywriter: one ask, one draft. It does not control workflow execution, so it is not an agent.
- Workflow automation: a human architects the path, the tool runs it. Most Zapier and n8n setups, and model-plus-tools integrations, sit here.
- A real agent: decides the next step itself based on what it sees. This category is far smaller than the marketing suggests.
"Marketing engineers"
On October 8 Greg Isenberg published a thread, with about 146,000 views, on a stack of agents covering call analysis, landing pages and ad launches. His key line: agents learn far more from examples than from adjectives. Give the agent ten winning ads rather than telling it to "write an engaging ad".
"Code with a thinking loop"
On October 21 Cody Schneider wrote that a marketing agent is at heart "code with a thinking loop on a live data stream", and that running a Facebook ads account does not need an open-ended reasoning agent but discrete code making narrow decisions. The post promotes his own product, but the idea holds: the budget is no place for improvisation.
What we take from it
- Ask: who decides the next step? If the answer is "the tool" at every step, ask how you stop it.
- Automation for the repetitive, humans for judgement. First reply, scheduling, reports: automate. Budget, complaints, pricing: a named person.
- Examples beat instructions. Your archive of posts and ads that worked is the most valuable asset you have when training any tool.
- The platforms are moving the same way. Meta's ads assistant, in test this month, executes its proposals only after you approve. Even the platform owner does not trust its agent without a gate.
At OS Agency we deliberately build level-two automation for clients: a mapped path, real examples from their own work, and a human decision at every point that touches money or a customer. And if someone promises you an agent that "runs all your marketing", ask them about the photographer.
